Why convert GLB to USDZ?
Converting GLB to USDZ is the usual way to offer the same product model in AR on iOS (USDZ) and Android (GLB).
What changes in the conversion
- Units. GLB is in metres; USDZ is usually read as millimetres. Small models are scaled ×1000 automatically – you can change this before downloading.
- Animation and rigs are not exported. The model is written in its rest (bind) pose.
- Geometry is preserved. Every triangle, with all object transforms applied, ends up in the new file.

About the formats
GLB (binary glTF) was defined by the Khronos Group as the single-file binary form of glTF 2.0. It packs meshes, PBR materials, textures, scene hierarchy and animations into one compact file. It is the standard for 3D on the web, AR viewers, e-commerce product views and game engines.
USDZ (Universal Scene Description (zipped)) was based on Pixar's Universal Scene Description and adopted by Apple for AR Quick Look. It is an uncompressed zip package with a USD scene and its textures. It is the format iPhone and iPad use to show 3D models in augmented reality straight from Safari and Messages.
