Why convert USDZ to GLB?

USDZ models from Apple's AR Quick Look gallery or Reality Composer can be reused on the web or in Android AR by converting them to GLB.

What changes in the conversion

  • Units. GLB is defined in metres. Large models (in millimetres) are scaled ×0.001 automatically so they appear at real size.
  • Geometry is preserved. Every triangle, with all object transforms applied, ends up in the new file.

About the formats

USDZ (Universal Scene Description (zipped)) was based on Pixar's Universal Scene Description and adopted by Apple for AR Quick Look. It is an uncompressed zip package with a USD scene and its textures. It is the format iPhone and iPad use to show 3D models in augmented reality straight from Safari and Messages.

GLB (binary glTF) was defined by the Khronos Group as the single-file binary form of glTF 2.0. It packs meshes, PBR materials, textures, scene hierarchy and animations into one compact file. It is the standard for 3D on the web, AR viewers, e-commerce product views and game engines.
