How to Open an STL File on Windows, Mac, Linux and Phone

An STL file is just a list of triangles, so almost anything with a 3D renderer can open it once you know which app or browser tool to use.

If you need to know how to open an STL file, the short answer is: drag it into a browser-based viewer, a free slicer, or the built-in preview on your operating system. STL is the most common format for 3D printing, and it stores nothing but a surface made of triangles – no colour, no units, no design history. That simplicity means it opens almost everywhere, but it also explains most of the problems people hit. This guide covers every major platform, what you should check once the file is open, why some STLs refuse to load, and what to do next.

What is an STL file?

STL (from stereolithography) describes the outside surface of an object as a mesh of flat triangles. Each triangle has three corner points and a normal vector that says which side faces outward. A curved surface is approximated with many small triangles, so a smooth sphere might use anything from a few hundred to a few hundred thousand of them.

There are two flavours:

  • Binary STL – an 80-byte header, a 4-byte triangle count, then exactly 50 bytes per triangle. A 1,000,000-triangle model is therefore about 50 MB. This is what nearly all CAD programs and model sites produce.
  • ASCII STL – the same data written as readable text, starting with the word solid. It is typically four to five times larger than the binary version of the same mesh.

STL has no unit field. By convention almost everyone treats the numbers as millimetres, which is why a model exported in inches can appear 25.4 times too small.

How to open an STL file in the browser (any device)

The fastest route on any computer, tablet or phone is a browser viewer. Open the STL viewer, drop the file on the page or tap to choose it, and the model renders immediately. The file is processed locally in your browser, so nothing has to be uploaded and there is no install.

This works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iPhone, iPad and Android, which makes it the best option when you are on a borrowed machine or checking a file someone just emailed you. If you are not sure what format you have, the general 3D viewer accepts STL, OBJ, 3MF, STEP, GLB, FBX and PLY.

How to open STL files on Windows

  • 3D Viewer – Microsoft's viewer app was included with Windows 10 and some Windows 11 installs and opens STL with a double-click. It is no longer actively developed, so do not count on it being present.
  • A slicer – UltiMaker Cura, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer and Bambu Studio are all free and open STL directly. If you own a printer you need one anyway.
  • CAD and mesh tools – Blender, FreeCAD and MeshLab are free and import STL for editing rather than just viewing.

To make STL files open with a specific program by default, right-click any .stl file, choose Open with → Choose another app, select the program and tick Always use this app.

How to open STL files on Mac

macOS can preview STL files without extra software. Select the file in Finder and press the Space bar to open Quick Look; you can drag to rotate the model. This is useful for a quick look but shows no dimensions or mesh statistics.

For more detail, the same free slicers (Cura, PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio) and Blender all have native macOS builds, including Apple Silicon versions.

How to open STL files on Linux

Most desktop environments do not ship an STL viewer by default. Common free options:

  • PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer or Cura – available as AppImage or Flatpak packages.
  • MeshLab – good for inspecting and cleaning meshes.
  • FreeCAD and Blender – in most distribution repositories.
  • f3d – a lightweight, fast command-line and GUI viewer.

If you only need to look at a file once, a browser viewer avoids installing anything.

How to open STL files on iPhone and Android

Neither iOS nor Android has a dependable built-in STL viewer. You have two options:

  1. Use the browser. Save the attachment to Files (iPhone) or Downloads (Android), open the STL viewer in Safari or Chrome, and pick the file. Pinch to zoom and drag to rotate.
  2. Install a viewer app. Several free STL viewer apps exist in both stores, and printer makers' own apps (for example Bambu Handy) can preview models sent to the printer.

Very large files (hundreds of MB) may be slow on a phone because the whole mesh must fit in memory. For those, a desktop is the better tool.

What to check once the STL is open

Opening the file is only step one. Before you print, sell or send the model on, check these points:

CheckWhy it mattersWhat "good" looks like
Bounding box (X × Y × Z)Confirms units and that it fits your build plateSensible size in mm, e.g. 60 × 40 × 25 for a small part
Triangle countDrives file size and slicing timeTens of thousands to ~1 million for most prints
Watertight / manifoldSlicers need a closed solid to decide what is insideNo open edges, no non-manifold edges
Inverted normalsFlipped faces confuse inside/outsideAll faces point outward
VolumeMaterial use and cost estimatePositive, plausible value in cm³

A quick sanity test for units: if a coffee mug reports 3.5 × 3.2 × 4 mm, it was almost certainly modelled in inches or centimetres. Scale it by 25.4 or 10 respectively with the STL scaling tool. Once the mesh is closed, a volume calculator gives you volume and estimated weight for common filaments.

Why won't my STL file open?

When a viewer shows an error, a blank scene or a model that looks like shattered glass, the cause is usually one of these:

The file is incomplete or empty

Interrupted downloads and failed email attachments produce truncated files. A binary STL's size must equal 84 + 50 × triangles bytes; if it does not, the parser will reject it or load only part of it. Download the file again, ideally as a ZIP.

It is not really an STL

Files sometimes get renamed to .stl when they are actually OBJ, 3MF (which is a ZIP archive) or even a web page saved from a broken download link. Open the file in a text editor: an ASCII STL starts with solid, a 3MF starts with PK, and HTML starts with <!DOCTYPE or <html.

A binary STL whose header starts with "solid"

Some exporters write the word solid into the binary header. Naive readers then try to parse it as text and fail. Most modern viewers detect this by checking the file size, but older software may not. Re-exporting from the source program, or opening and re-saving in a slicer, fixes it.

The file is too large

Scans and high-resolution sculpts can exceed 5–10 million triangles and 250–500 MB. Phones and low-memory laptops may run out of memory. Use reduce STL file size to decimate the mesh to a few hundred thousand triangles; for printing at 0.1–0.2 mm layer heights the visible difference is usually negligible.

The model opens but looks wrong

Holes, missing faces or dark patches usually mean broken geometry rather than a broken file. The slicer may refuse it or produce strange layers. Run it through STL repair, which closes holes and fixes flipped faces automatically.

The model is invisible or off-screen

If the coordinates are in metres or the model sits thousands of units from the origin, the camera may not frame it. Use the viewer's "fit to view" or "zoom to extents" option, then rescale or recentre.

What to do after opening an STL

  • Print it: load it into your slicer, orient it, add supports if needed, slice and export G-code or a printer project file.
  • Estimate cost: combine the volume, material price and print time in a print cost calculator.
  • Make a preview image: render a clean thumbnail for a listing or documentation with STL to PNG.
  • Get a 2D outline: export a silhouette or cross-section for laser cutting or CNC by converting the STL to SVG or DXF.
  • Edit it properly: STL is a poor format for design changes. If you need to move a hole or change a wall thickness, go back to the original CAD file (often STEP) when you can get it.

FAQ

Can I open an STL file without installing software?

Yes. A browser-based STL viewer opens the file directly in Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge on any operating system, including phones. On a Mac you can also press Space on the file in Finder for a Quick Look preview.

Does an STL file contain colour or units?

No. Standard STL stores only triangle geometry. A few programs add non-standard colour data that most software ignores, and there is no unit field, so values are usually assumed to be millimetres. Use 3MF or OBJ if you need colour or materials.

Why is my STL so small or so large in the slicer?

The model was probably exported in different units than the slicer assumes. A part that is 25.4 times too small was modelled in inches; 10 times too small usually means centimetres; 1000 times too small means metres. Scale it by the matching factor.

Can I edit an STL file?

You can scale, cut, merge, repair and simplify an STL with mesh tools, and sculpt it in Blender. Precise design changes such as resizing a hole are much easier in the original CAD file, because STL has no features or dimensions to edit, only triangles.

What is the difference between ASCII and binary STL?

Both store the same triangles. Binary uses a fixed 50 bytes per triangle and is roughly four to five times smaller; ASCII is human-readable text. Use binary unless a specific tool requires ASCII.
